LoginIs VA Disability Compensation Counted When Applying for Food Stamps?
Food stamps aka “SNAP” stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
For SNAP purposes, “income” includes both earned income such as wages and unearned income such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Veterans disability, pension, and death benefits. Because Veterans’ and disability benefits are not explicitly excluded from income, they are counted when determining a household’s eligibility for SNAP benefits.
That does not mean you won’t qualify since there are many factors including age, number of family members under 18 and over age 60 as well as disabled. Also, SNAP and many state-based programs are looking at NET income which is gross minus certain outgo such as medical expenses.
