VA Benefits for Spouses of Disabled Veterans: DIC Benefits (Dependency and Indemnity Compensation)

We are going to start off with Dependency and Indemnity Compensation also known as DIC. This is probably the best VA benefit available for spouse of disabled veterans after you pass away. If you have a condition that has a high likelihood to be the main cause or a contributing factor in your death it is worth getting it service connected.

The best example I can give you is disabled veterans with heart conditions. If you have high blood pressure or heart attacks or heart problems in general it would be a good idea to get as many of those things service connected even at zero percent because if you pass away from a service connected disability then your spouse will be eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.

Another way for your spouse to be eligible or Dependency and Indemnity Compensation benefits is if you are have a 100% rating and you hold that rating for 10 years in a row, that would make your spouse eligible for this benefit.

You have to be married to your spouse for at least one year prior to your passing away and after you pass away your spouse cannot get remarried until she is over the age of 57 if she wants to continue getting monthly compensation payments. After she is over the age of 57 she can safely remarry and get Dependency and Indemnity Compensation benefits.

These are the broad strokes for VA benefits for spouses of disabled veterans as they relate to Dependency and Indemnity Compensation benefits. There are lots of ins and outs with regard to age, getting remarried and children. When your spouse applies for DIC benefits after you pass away, she should be prepared to answer a lot of questions about your marriage, previous marriages and your children.
