VA Mental Health Ratings: How Are They Determined?

There are a few different things that go into determining mental health ratings for Veterans. VA regulations provide for ratings of 0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, or 100% for mental health conditions.The first is looking at symptom severity. How severe are the symptoms? Are they causing significant distress or impairment in functioning?

The second is looking at how long the symptoms have been present. If the symptoms are relatively new, it may not be as serious as someone who has been dealing with them for a long time.

The third is looking at any co-occurring conditions. If the Veteran has other mental health disorders or substance abuse problems, this can complicate things and make the overall picture more severe.
