VA Disability Compensation: The Special Monthly Payment For Veterans Explained
If you’re a disabled veteran, you may be eligible for a special monthly payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This benefit is called VA Special Monthly Compensation, and it’s available to veterans who have disabilities that are the result of their military service.
To be eligible for VA Disability Compensation, you must have a disability that is service-connected. This means that your disability must be the result of an injury or illness that was incurred or aggravated during your time in the military. If your disability is not service-connected, you may still be eligible for other VA benefits, but you will not receive VA Disability Compensation.
One type of Special Monthly Compensation is SMC(s). SMC(s) is available to veterans who either
have a 100 percent rating and an additional disability rated at or combining to 60 percent or more, or
who are substantially confined to his or her dwelling or immediate premises as a result of a service connected disability.
