Are Uber Drivers Eligible for Veterans Disability Benefits?
The short answer is no. VA unemployability benefits, otherwise known as Total Disability Individual VA Unemployability (TDIU), are only available to veterans who have a VA-rated service-connected disability or disabilities that make them unable to work in a substantially gainful employment (meaning a job with an income at least equal to the national poverty level). If you are an Uber driver, your income likely exceeds this threshold and thus you would not be eligible for VA unemployability benefits.
However, if you have VA rated service-connected disabilities that affect your ability to drive and/or impair your safety while driving, then your VA disability rating could be increased so that it meets the criteria for VA unemployability benefits. VA unemployability benefits provide a lifetime monthly compensation to eligible veterans who cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to VA-rated service-connected disabilities.
