Video: Simplifying VA Dependent Pay: Adding & Removing Dependents Explained

Combat Craig

When navigating VA dependent pay, understanding how to add or remove dependents from your benefits can simplify the process and ensure you’re receiving the correct compensation. Dependent pay is an additional benefit provided to veterans with a disability rating of 30% or higher who have qualifying dependents, such as a spouse, child, or parent. Keeping your information up-to-date with the VA is essential, as your compensation rate is directly tied to the number and type of dependents listed on your profile.

To add a dependent, you will typically need to submit VA Form 21-686c, Declaration of Status of Dependents, along with supporting documents, such as marriage certificates or birth certificates, to verify their eligibility. This process can be completed online through the VA’s eBenefits portal or via mail. On the other hand, removing a dependent, such as after a divorce or when a child is no longer eligible, also requires notifying the VA promptly to avoid overpayment and potential debt collection. By regularly reviewing your benefits and keeping the VA informed of any changes, you can ensure that you receive the appropriate level of compensation and avoid unnecessary complications.
