Combat Craig

VA Housebound benefits are an additional tax-free monthly allowance paid to eligible veterans on top of their regular monthly disability compensation from the VA. One such benefit is the Housebound Allowance, also known as Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) for Housebound veterans.

Who is Eligible for VA Housebound Benefits?

To be eligible for VA housebound benefits, a veteran must have a service-connected disability rated at 100% or be entitled to Special Monthly Compensation at the 100% rate. They must also meet one of the following criteria:

They are permanently housebound due to their service-connected disability
They have a permanent disability that requires regular aid and attendance from another individual

How Much is the VA Housebound Benefit?

The current maximum monthly amount for VA Housebound benefits is $4288.45 in 2025.

How to Apply for VA Housebound Benefits

To apply for VA housebound benefits, veterans can complete and submit an application online through the VA’s eBenefits portal. They can also visit their nearest VA regional office to apply in person or mail in a completed application form.

Additional Benefits for Housebound Veterans

Aside from the monthly monetary allowance, housebound veterans may also be eligible for other benefits such as:

Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant: This program offers grants to help adapt a veteran’s home to accommodate their disability.

Automobile Allowance: Eligible veterans can receive a one-time payment towards purchasing an automobile that is adapted to fit their needs due to their service-connected disability.

Clothing Allowance: Housebound veterans who require aid and attendance from another individual for personal care may be eligible for an annual clothing allowance to help cover the cost of maintaining their personal appearance.

Housebound veterans who are unable to leave their home without assistance due to a service-connected disability may be eligible for VA housebound benefits. These benefits provide additional financial assistance and support to those who have made sacrifices in serving our country.

If you or someone you know may be eligible for these benefits, it is important to apply and utilize all available resources through the VA. To learn more about VA Housebound Benefits and other services offered by the VA, visit their website or contact your nearest VA regional office. So, if you or a loved one is a housebound veteran, make sure to explore all options for obtaining the VA Housebound Benefits and other benefits that may be available to you.
